This course will explore the phenomenon of the superhero genre, and we will use the examples presented to clarify how to build a character, tell a story and write a screenplay. Super Hero movies give us clear and easily understood examples of Character, Goal, Conflict, Stakes, Flaws, Transformation and Creative Resolutions. We’ll use their lessons to better understand how to create powerful works, whether action films or more intimate character driven movies.
We’ll find excellent samples of story patterns and structure, but we’ll also see the limits of formula, and the need for creative engagement with your story. How do you keep characters fresh and believable? How do you create worlds that ground the outlandish powers and events these characters embody? How do you vary your stories?
