2019 SHANGHAITECH UNIVERSITY AND USC SCHOOL OF CINEMATIC ARTS SCREENWRITING WORKSHOP OPEN CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The ShanghaiTech University - USC School of Cinematic Arts Filmmaking Program in Screenwriting is now accepting applications. The non-commercial, non-degree certificate program is initiated and organized by ShanghaiTech University. A recipient of the Shanghai Film Fund by Shanghai Cultural Development Foundation, the program is aimed at introducing top-notch North American Film Education and industrial protocols into Shanghai. The entire program is taught by USC SCA faculty, as well as industry experts from China and the US. Those who complete the coursework will be awarded a certificate co-signed by ShanghaiTech University and USC SCA.

INSTRUCTOR: PETER GAMBLE ROBINSON


Peter Gamble Robinson, adjunct professor in USC’s screenwriting program since 2008. He began his career as the ghostwriter of House of Sand and Fog and then worked for 12 years in the writers’ room of A-List screenwriter Ed Solomon on films including Now You See Me and Now You See Me 2. His script The Harrowing has won awards at Scriptapalooza, the CAPE New Writer’s Award and was a semi-finalist for the Nichol. He is the co-writer of Office Uprising (starring Brenton Thwaites, Zachary Levi & Jane Levy) which was developed for Crackle. Most recently he’s completed the animated features Wish Police &The Mischievians for ReelFX, and is developing the project Supervillain Academy with them.


Peter is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s film program where he received both his BFA in screenwriting (Cum Laude) and his MFA in directing. He has taught various screenwriting masterclasses since 2010.


2QUALIFICATION AND APPLICATION


QUALIFICATION The applicant should have professional or long-standing creative experience in screenwriting and have completed scripts for either films or TV.

2)Creative Challenge 1(required)


Please write a scene between two very different kinds of people who get stuck in an elevator on New Year’s Eve. Please write in English, prose form, 12pt, double space, 1-2 pages. There should be no flashbacks in the story.


3)Creative Challenge 2(required)


Please write about the Most Challenging Moment in your life: Convey in writing the greatest challenge you have faced and how you responded to it. The challenge may be of any kind you care to write about – physical, emotional, moral, creative, personal, professional or some other sort. Please write in English, prose form, 12pt, double space, 1-2 pages.


4)Excerpt of your previous works (optional)


Please provide an excerpt of up to 10 pages from one of your scripts or other narrative form of writings. It can be either in English or Chinese.(Please indicate if the script was produced or of the novel was published, if applicable.

The admission committee will start the selection process upon receipt of the complete application.
