Subject introduction

01 What is 'Industrial Design'?

In traditional sense, 'Industrial Design' refers to industrial designers designing products, equipment and services, while paying attention to the function of the product, the aesthetics and ergonomics of the appearance, and the interaction and experience of people with these products and services. With the rise of the Internet industry, the extension of products has also expanded to virtual products.

In the setting of many colleges and universities, the 'Industrial Design' major will adjust the professional connotation according to the accumulation and expertise of the school, which generally includes product design, transportation design, and even environmental design and entertainment design. With the advent of the intelligent age, the name of the future industrial designer may become the intelligent design division. In accordance with the development of science and technology, combined with ShanghaiTech University's strong intelligent technology research and development resources, the School of Creativity and Art of ShanghaiTech University has also positioned the 'Industrial Design' major as 'Intelligent Design'.

02 What is the uniqueness of the 'Industrial Design' (Intelligent Design) major of ShanghaiTech University?

The Industrial Design (Intelligent Design) major of ShanghaiTech University upholds the overall scientific spirit of ShanghaiTech University, relying on scientific research resources and the atmosphere of technological entrepreneurship, and the unique high-tech industrial cluster in Zhangjiang, where ShanghaiTech University is located, integrating information, material, life, etc. The teaching resources and research directions in the field have established their own unique [Technology X Design] teaching system.

Our students are able to use both left and right brains to think at the same time, have broad scientific literacy and solid design skills; have the ability to understand and analyze various emerging technologies, and apply them organically to their designs; or use smart technology to Optimize the design methods to make the perfect integration of technology and design. From a long-term perspective, we hope that students majoring in 'Intelligent Design' can grow into leading design talents who start from a design perspective, lead the implementation and transformation of smart technology in the form of products, and generate far-reaching social influence.

03 What knowledge, abilities and qualities do industrial designers (smart designers) in the new era need?

Excellent industrial designers must have keen insight, empathy, fast learning ability, collaboration ability and creativity. The knowledge, abilities, and qualities required by industrial designers have always been compounded: technical, psychological, ergonomic, and market factors need to be mobilized to provide consumers with the most perfect service and experience through products.

In this highly informatized era, the thickness and breadth of knowledge has doubled, so the three dimensions of knowledge, ability, and quality have been upgraded to a certain extent. Intelligent designers in the new era must have the learning capabilities that meet this complex era, including complex thinking skills, research capabilities, and analysis capabilities. Therefore, they must have an interdisciplinary knowledge structure and learning methods. For smart technology and smart working methods, it is not only necessary to 'know how it is', but also necessary to know 'why it is'.

Smart designers must have a strong curiosity, an open mind, and the ability to connect with people. The world is now flatter and the barriers to using technology are lowered. Repetitive and purely technical work can easily be replaced. In this case, only those who are continuously driven by strong curiosity, and have communication and leadership skills, can simultaneously gain access to technology, innovation processes and tools, humans and society at both the micro and macro levels. In-depth and intuitive understanding of behaviors and trends, as well as system thinking, and realize their own ideas.

04 What are the advantages of science and engineering students in learning 'Industrial Design' (Intelligent Design)?

According to the traditional classification of disciplines, 'Industrial Design' belongs to the category of science and engineering. This major emphasizes rational design, a very important part of which is the design of physical products, the availability of products, the possibility of mass production, the sustainability of products, and environmental responsibility, all of which require our designers not to stop In terms of concept, it is necessary to put forward very high requirements for the rigor and technical content of the design. In this regard, children with a foundation in science and engineering have an advantage.

Advanced to 'Intelligent Design', you can multiply the advantages of science and engineering students. 'Intelligent Design' includes technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, big data, and intelligent manufacturing that are in line with the characteristics of modern industrial products, requiring students to have a solid mathematical foundation and natural science knowledge. In our courses, there are also many practical aspects of intelligent technology. The basic courses of Introduction to Information Science, Digital Signals, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and other courses have practical links; advanced courses in the fields of robotics, human-computer interaction, etc., It also requires the accumulation of strong smart technology.

05 What kind of job can students who majored in 'Industrial Design' (Intelligent Design) of ShanghaiTech University?

China has quickly entered the era of digital intelligence. In the current and future of rapid transformation, a large number of intelligent products and services will enter the public's field of vision. These are the work and development directions of intelligent designers in the future. The [Technology x Design] knowledge and abilities acquired by students in our undergraduate education can open the door to design, technology, engineering or business-related fields for students.

After graduation, our students have a broad and diverse development path. If students choose to work, they will quickly integrate into the intelligent/high-tech industry, and have the ability to lead creative teams, or turn to the management of innovative organizations, and ultimately lead large organizations and companies. In terms of further studies, if our students want to develop on the path of engineers and human-computer interaction, they can also quickly connect with good basic education. At the same time, the innovation and entrepreneurship cultivation of ShanghaiTech University will also enable some students to start their own businesses after graduation.

06 Does the company agree with the development direction of this kind of talent training?

In the process of preparing for the profession, we collected and sorted out the job requirements of many employers in the fields of smart hardware, smart appliances, robots, medical equipment, Internet of Things, Internet, and design consulting in the direction of product research and development. Employers generally list innovation ability, logical thinking, understanding and analysis ability of cross-field trends, technology and design composite background, and communication and expression skills as judges of product development staff Important standards.

According to employers, designers with traditional design backgrounds are mainly specialized in subdivision work of design professions, but their development is often limited due to lack of practical understanding and strategic judgment of advanced technology. At the same time, entering product design from the engineer path often lacks the user-centric cognition necessary to transform technology into products, as well as the relevant research and integration capabilities. Therefore, companies are looking forward to the emergence of compound majors that truly break the traditional professional barriers, in order to cultivate new design talents with rigorous research and analysis capabilities, solid design skills and judgment, extensive understanding of cutting-edge technologies and processes, and skilled application of technological tools.
