"CONVERGENT·INNOVATION, RETHINKING THE DESIGN EDUCATION"

+A New Landscape

In the information age of economic globalization, new technology clusters are pushing human civilization to a new stage. Big data, artificial intelligence, advanced intelligent manufacturing, green technology, etc. have created new patterns, technology and social development have become closer, and professional boundaries are becoming Dispelled, new things continue to emerge.  The object, content, process and method that design faces in the process of problem solving will also face huge challenges. Design education, design research, and design practice will inevitably blend with cutting-edge technology and evolve together in the fields of technological innovation, cultural innovation, and business innovation. In 2021, the industrial design (intelligent design) major of the School of Creativity and Art of ShanghaiTech University came into being, exploring the establishment of a new design education paradigm in a small-scale, high-level, international research-oriented and innovative university. It is the challenge and opportunity given by the times.

The theme of Tongji Design Week 2021 is A New Landscape. As a sub-forum of Tongji Design Week to gather wisdom and explore intelligent design education, this forum invites guests from College of Design & Innovation of Tongji University and the School of Creativity and Art of ShanghaiTech University to work together from the three dimensions of design education, industrial practice, and the integration of science and art. Explore the link between technology and design, explore the relationship between intelligent design in virtual and reality, and plan the future of intelligent design education.

In the field of art and design, different colleges and universities have different cultural and artistic climates. The forum aims to gather their own heterogeneous thinking and exploration, collide with each other, and give feedback to each other. Create a meaningful cross-industry and cross-disciplinary exchange platform for academic institutions of different backgrounds. The forum links the two colleges to share academic resources, laboratory space, enhance teacher-student exchanges, and build a design innovation of Each to appreciate their own virtues, and if they can co-exist, there will be harmony in the world. Ecological alliance to jointly promote the development of intelligent design education.

+Introduction of College

College of Design & Innovation in Tongji University, developed from the Art and Design Department of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, was formally established in May 2009. The establishment of the college is to better respond to the needs of design and innovation from social, economic, technological and environmental changes, especially the background of the transition from "Made in China" to "Created in China", the transformation of economic growth methods, and the upgrading of industrial structure The development needs of Shanghai, and the sustainable development-oriented discipline development strategy of Tongji University. The college is committed to cultivating the leading talents of sustainable design innovation urgently needed in the new era. The overall construction goal is to become an international, innovative, forward-looking and research-oriented world-class design school with the mission of the times, global vision, and local characteristics.

School of Creativity and Art in Shanghai Tech University, established in November in 2017.  College aims to develop an institute of higher education that is at the forefront of our country. We will be fully engaged internationally to promote innovation and collaboration of design and creative arts with advanced science and technology to provide a pioneering platform for study, research, experiment, exchange, growth and breakthroughs. Our goal is to challenge the next generation of creative art professionals to inject new inspirations and momentum into China and provide humanity advances in our cultural and spiritual lives.  The establishment of the Industrial Design (Smart Design) program at the School of Creativity and Art is an answer to the development of the new era. Built upon the foundation of such information science and technologies as digital technologies and human-computer interaction, with the care for user experience at its core, our education equally emphasizes the perception, expression, and physical realization of design. From the very conception of this program, the curriculum integrates smart technologies and industrial design. The program is also committed to enriching students' humanistic and artistic qualities. The purpose is to cultivate a new generation of designers and design researchers who create products for the future.
